Votives are generally burned in votive glasses and have smaller flames. The wax stays contained and you get the time they were meant to last for because you consume all the wax. Luminaries are meant to burn bigger and brighter outside in bags or plates and have larger flames. A lot of wax escapes in luminaries into the dirt or out of the flames reach to consume it. So we use a larger wick to consume more wax and also to fight the wind and outside elements.
Just in case no one gives you burning instructions for a luminary candle in a bag I thought I would help you out. Fill each bag with about 3- 4 inches of sand. Dump about 3/4 cup of water into the middle of the bag. Take your candle and swirl it around creating a little cup. So the diameter of the cup you created is about an 1/2" bigger on either side of the candle. This will help in the pooling of your candle. Making your candle last longer as well as brighter.
All of our luminaries are compression molded and made of clean burning paraffin wax.
